Can family members be present during cremation?

In some religions and cultures the cremation process is attended as a part of the funeral itself. Funeral homes and crematories are becoming more open to these groups. Past scandals, although rare, have heightened vigilance leading to requests by family members to witness the cremation.

  • First, look for an offer to witness the cremation on the website.
  • If this is a particularly key point to you, search online for a cremation firm with a crematory onsite. Many funeral homes outsource their cremations to so-called “trade crematories”.
  • Ask about this during the planning and prepayment phase. Many firms allow prepaying customers to visit their cremation facility and see for themselves how every thing works.
  • For the family with religious and cultural reasons for bringing their relatives and friends to the cremation, give a full and clear description of customs to the funeral director.

Canadian and American funeral firms are on an upward learning curve about cremation in various religions. Most are eager to meet the needs of today’s customers.
