Shipping Cremated Remains

The United States Postal Service, via Priority Mail Express, is the only legal method of shipping cremated remains domestically or internationally. The most recent guidelines were issued Oct. 14, 2014.

The prohibition against using Registered Mail is likely due to the extra care and handling given to Priority Mail Express packages. Registered Mail simply is simply a signature proof of delivery which is included with Priority Mail Express.

FedEx, UPS or other carriers do not ship cremated remains. Read more about regulations and requirements for shipping remains.

Shipping cremated remains is occurring more frequently:

More people are choosing direct cremation. In the case of a simple cremation with no services, the ashes are simply returned to the family. In some cases, family members pick up the remains, while in others, they are shipped.

Death away from home. It’s less expensive to have a body cremated and send the remains home than it is to ship the body for cremation in another location.
